Dr Divesh Srivastava, the Head of Database Research at AT&T Labs, will present a special lecture on a vision of high-quality big data for responsible data science to The University of Queensland School of Information Technology & Electrical Engineering (ITEE) on Monday 10 February 2020.

The lecture is part of the ITEE Distinguished Lecture Series in Data Science and will be hosted by Associate Professor Helen Huang of the ITEE Data Science Group.

Data science and analysis will be a key research focus of the new Life Course Centre. Associate Professor Huang will be joining the Centre as a Chief Investigator, as will Dr Srivastava as an Associate Investigator. Their skills will be crucial to increasing the Centre’s capacity to link and analyse increasingly large and variable data sets from multiple sources in order to map the complex interactions of social disadvantage.

In his lecture, Dr Srivastava will explain how responsible data science requires a recognition of the importance of veracity – the fourth ‘V’ of big data. He will also highlight the substantial challenges that the first three ‘Vs’ – volume, velocity and variety – bring to dealing with veracity in big data, as well as some recent results that are cause for optimism.

AT&T Labs is the research and development division of American multinational AT&T, the world’s largest telecommunications company. As well as his role as the Head of Database Research at AT&T Labs, Dr Srivastava is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), on the ACM Publications Board and an associate editor of the ACM Transactions on Data Science, the Vice President of the Very Large Data Base Endowment, and on the Board of Directors of the Computing Research Association. He received his PhD from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and his Bachelor of Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.

Dr Srivastava’s ITEE Distinguished Lecture will be held from 2:00pm-3:30pm on Monday 10 February 2020.
