Workshop

Fun with stats: Making the most of Stata software

In this workshop Paco will share some tips and tricks on how to make the most of the statistical software package Stata. He will focus on some features which remain under utilised by the average user. If invoked appropriately, such features can help accomplish tasks more efficiently and effectively, saving time and/or reducing the possibility of human error.

The workshop is similar in content to that delivered last year by Professor Kit Baum at ISSR, though shorter, more accessible and more interactive. It will touch on topics such as: loop structures; global and local macros; egen and string functions; tools to export results out of Stata; basic .ado programming; and how to draw cats in Stata.

Parts of the workshop cover fairly complex materials. Hence, the session is primarily aimed at people who have some working knowledge on Stata, or advanced knowledge in other software packages. Beginners are also welcome, as they will be able to identify features that they may be able to use in the future.

During the session, participants will be encouraged to ask questions and share their experiences. At the end, time permitting, Paco will ask participants to share issues/challenges they may be experiencing in their daily use of Stata for class discussion and to identify potential solutions.

Dr Paco Perales is an Associate Professor at ISSR and the ARC Centre for Excellence for Children and Families over the Life Course (Life Course Centre) and an ARC DECRA Fellow.
