The Life Course Centre together with the School of Economics invites you to attend our Anti-Poverty Week Presentation.
About this Event Anti-Poverty Week is held each year to coincide with the UN’s International Anti-Poverty Day on 17 October. Its aim is to strengthen public understanding, concern and action about poverty and hardship in Australia and around the world. The Life Course Centre is pleased to be supporting Anti-Poverty week as it aligns with the work of our Research centre.
This is an opportunity for students to hear a talk from esteemed alumni, Edwina Chen and Hugh Harley.
Edwina Chen is the Manager of Program Implementation at the Aboriginal Land Council, a position she has held since August 2017. She is responsible for designing and developing innovative and flexible capital funding packages for a range of early stage business ventures. Edwina has also held the position of Manager, Economic Development at the NSW Aboriginal Land Council. Edwina’s career began in the professional services, first at Horwath Sydney before undertaking Senior Analyst and Client Manager roles at Deloitte Australia, specialising in advising financiers and management of distressed and under-performing businesses. In 2011, Edwina was selected to partner with Save the Children in Vietnam as part of AusAID’s Australian Youth Ambassador for Development (AYAD) program. Her experience led her to consult for Save the Children in Vietnam, providing technical and business development support in the thematic of Livelihoods which included microfinance to poor and low-income women farmers, producers & traders; small business management; employment and entrepreneurial development for youth and people with disabilities; and food security.
Edwina is a qualified Chartered Accountant and holds a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Sydney.
Hugh Harley has over three decades experience in the banking, professional services, academic, and not-for-profit sectors. He currently spreads his time between teaching economics at the University of Sydney and as Chairman of Cancer Council Australia. Hugh has been actively involved in the not-for-profit sector for over 30 years, having held Chairman, Treasurer and Director roles in the tertiary, religious, professional and health sectors. He has also been actively involved in the economic policy debate for much of the same period, including as editor of Economic Papers. In his professional life, Hugh has held executive and non-executive roles at Commonwealth Bank of Australia, ING Direct, and PriceWaterhouseCoopers. He continues to be an advisor in the Australian corporate sector. Hugh has honours degrees in Economics and Law from the University of Sydney, and a M.Phil in Economics from the University of Cambridge. He is Adjunct Professor in the School of Economics at the University of Sydney.
