Australia is a far less equal place than it was in the 1980s

An article in The Sydney Morning Herald, published 17 March 2018, highlights research by Life Course Centre Fellow Nathan Deutscher into inequality in Australia.

By using some clever research techniques, Nathan was able to demonstrate that ‘every year that a teenager delayed moving to a higher income suburb cost them 4 per cent of the eventual boost to their income’.

It seems those teen years are particularly influential to a child’s development. Moving from a poor suburb in the teen years was shown to be more effective in boosting a child’s eventual income than if the move occurred during the early childhood years.

Author of the article, journalist Peter Martin, concludes, ‘Australia is a far less equal place than it was in the 1980s. But that’s not all. There’s also less equality of opportunity.’
